Guerrilla Galleries

Street art – that’s graffiti to you and me – has become a booming industry since London’s Lazarides gallery started auctioning off Banksy prints for more money than most of us will see in a lifetime. Angelina Jolie paid a cool £200,000 for her print by Bristol’s most famous art vandal, but you can get a taste of the south west’s finest up and coming street artists by heading down to the newly opened Guerrilla Galleries on Gloucester Road, where prices start from the much more reasonable fifty quid. Bargain.

Christmas with the Rat Pack

If you’re dreaming of a White Christmas, how better to make that dream come true than by joining Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis Jnr and Dean Martin at this upcoming Christmas extravaganza that’s sure to warm hearts of all ages. Fresh from the fourth year of their West End show, the Rat Pack bring the glamour and style of the 1950s to Bristol’s own Colston Hall for two nights this December, performing old standards with a distinctly festive twist, from Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer to the immortal Let it Snow.

With a talented cast supported by a fifteen piece orchestra, Christmas with the Rat Pack promises a night that brings the world famous classic recordings of Frank, Sammy And Dean back to life in a swinging way that won’t disappoint. But don’t take our word for it: this show’s notched up the impressive figure of one thousand performances in its four years on the West End’s Strand theatre and been nominated for a prestigious Olivier award. Catch them in Bristol for an unforgettable night dedicated to moonlight, music and, of course, in Sinatra’s immortal words, ‘a little hey-hey’. Christmas magic.

Sofa Project

A Bristol Based charity, the SOFA Project stands for Shifting Old Furniture Around. Actually, they stand for quite a bit more than that – helping to furnish homes at affordable prices as well as promoting the re-use of everything from soft furnishing to electrical appliances that would otherwise end up in the tip. They help 7000 homes every year, offering reduced rates to families on low incomes.

But you don’t need to be hard-up to appreciate a bargain. Many discerning families are coming to SOFA – glad they can give back a little something when they take away something new for themselves. Julian Williams, SOFA’s director, is keen to point out that most of the items now coming into their hands are of a very high quality, with many of the pieces on sale never having been used. Because they’re a not-for-profit charity, the SOFA Project sells these items at a half or even a third of the price the same goods sold new on the high street might cost.

As well as a showroom that’s packed with bargain furniture, the SOFA Project also has a dedicated household appliance workshop to test, clean and refurbish white goods like washing machines, fridges and cookers. Everything sold comes with a range of warranty covers so shoppers can buy with confidence. With England and Wales producing over 100 million tonnes of waste annually – a figure growing by 3% every year – now’s the time to play your part in helping the environment by picking up something new for the house that’s easy on the eye, as well as the wallet.
